Brighton to Canterbury by Train

By Canterbury Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

The quickest rail route from Brighton goes through London. Thameslink runs from Brighton to London St Pancras in about an hour and a quarter, and Southeastern’s train from St Pancras reaches Canterbury West 54 minutes later. Including the change, the whole trip took about 2h 22m on a weekday.

The change at St Pancras

You arrive at and leave from the same station, London St Pancras, so there is no walk across London between the two trains. The time allowed for the change was about 12 minutes. If the Thameslink leg from Brighton runs more than a few minutes late you can miss the connection, and the next Canterbury West train from St Pancras is usually around an hour behind.

Departures from Brighton ran about hourly from 06:09 to 22:14, most of them at 14 minutes past the hour. After the 07:56, the next departure we found on this route was the 09:14, so for a start from Brighton in the eight o’clock hour, look at the route below.

Routes that avoid London

The weekday timetable also offers journeys that change at Hampden Park and Ashford International instead of in London. They left Brighton at 56 minutes past most hours from 07:56 to 20:56 and took around 2h 40m, about a quarter of an hour longer than the St Pancras route, with two changes rather than one. Their 08:56 departure suits a start from Brighton in that eight o’clock hour.

Routes through London Bridge or London Victoria came out slower still, at close to three hours from Brighton.

The 90-mile drive via the A23 takes about 1h 40m, so on this trip the car is faster than any of the rail options.

Arriving

Canterbury West, where the St Pancras train ends, is a 14-minute walk of about a kilometre to the Buttermarket, which makes the door-to-door time from Brighton station roughly 2h 35m.
